Kaplan Turbine/ Propeller Turbine

The Kaplan Turbine is an evolution of the Francis Turbine. Its invention allowed efficient power production in low water head.

Kaplan Turbine is an inward flow reaction turbine, which means that the working fluid changes pressure as it moves through the turbine and gives up its energy. The design combines radial and axial features. The inlet is a scroll shaped tube that wraps around the turbine's wicket gate. Water is directed tangentially through the wicket gate and spirals on to a propeller shaped runner, causing it to spin.

Kaplan Turbine is suitable for medium and low water head power plants, generally for 2-70 m, with the direction is vertical.

Specifications	The diameter of the runner is 0.5m- 5.0m;Suitable water head: H =2m- 70m;Suitable flow: Q =0.20m3/s- 20.0m3/s;Unit Capacity of the generator : 500KW -100MW.
Advantages	The structure of Kaplan Turbine is simple and suitable for the hydraulic power station with medium and low water head and big water flow. When water head and load change largely, they can still run efficiently and stably.
